11. Tiered Ladder-Style Herb and Plant Stand

Vertical A-frame ladder planters maximize limited floor space while bringing tiered cascading greenery indoors, onto balconies, or into sunrooms.

  • Materials: 2×2-inch pine or cedar boards (for the ladder frame), 1×6-inch boards (for planter shelves), 2-inch exterior-grade wood screws, waterproof wood sealant.
  • Tools: Miter saw, drill/driver, pocket hole jig, tape measure, angle finder.
  • How to Make It:
    1. Cut four 2×2 legs with matching 15-degree angled feet so they splay outward evenly.
    2. Build horizontal ladder rungs spaced 12 inches apart using pocket hole joints.
    3. Cut progressive shelf planks (widest on bottom, narrowest on top) to span between the rungs.
    4. Fasten the shelves securely onto the rungs from underneath using wood screws.
    5. Sand all corners to prevent splintering and apply a weather-resistant exterior stain or cedar protective oil.
  • Tips & Variations: Add small lip rails to the front and back of each shelf tier to secure ceramic pots against accidental bumps.
