14. Monolithic Solid Wood Block Side Table
Chunky, geometric block tables celebrate the weight and grain of solid wood. Made by laminating thick lumber beams together, they create a grounding presence in living rooms and reading nooks.
- Materials: 4×4-inch untreated Douglas fir or cedar posts, heavy-duty structural wood glue, 1/2-inch wood dowels, felt furniture glides, dark walnut or ebony stain, matte varnish.
- Tools: Compound miter saw, heavy bar/pipe clamps, doweling jig, electric hand planer or belt sander, orbital sander.
- How to Make It:
- Cut nine identical 18-inch lengths from clean 4×4 posts.
- Arrange the cut posts in a 3×3 grid to form a 10.5×10.5×18-inch solid monolith.
- Drill matching alignment dowel holes across adjacent faces and apply wood glue generously between all mating surfaces.
- Clamp the block tightly from all four sides using heavy-duty pipe clamps and let dry for 24 hours.
- Plane and sand the top and sides flush using a belt sander (starting at 60-grit, finishing at 240-grit), then stain and seal with flat matte varnish.
- Tips & Variations: Use the Japanese Shou Sugi Ban technique—charring the exterior wood with a blowtorch, brushing away excess soot, and sealing with tung oil for a deep, textured black finish.
