13. Minimalist Yin-Yang Balance Coaster
What This Idea Means
Representing harmony, contrast, and balance, the classic Yin-Yang symbol is adapted into a soft, textured coaster. Rendered in traditional black and white or soft modern neutrals (like mocha and cream), it creates a calming focal point.
Materials Needed
- Monk’s Cloth: Heavyweight monk’s cloth.
- Yarn: Espresso brown/black and ivory/cream yarn.
- Punch Needle Tool: Medium punch needle.
- Backing Material: Dark felt disk.
- Adhesive: Fabric adhesive.
- Tools: Circle compass, Yin-Yang curve template, hoop, scissors.
How to Make It
- Symmetrical Sketch: Trace a precise 4-inch circle. Draw the S-curve dividing line down the middle and add the two internal small eye circles.
- Eye Dots First: Punch the small opposite-color circles (eyes) first to keep their shapes clean and crisp.
- Section Filling: Fill one half with rich espresso yarn and the opposing half with creamy ivory yarn.
- Bordering: Punch a clean outer circular ring line, apply glue to the back side, trim excess fabric, fold over, and press onto felt backing.
Tips and Variations
- Modern Earth Palette: Replace black and white with muted olive and beige or terracotta and cream.
- Textured Shear: Shear the loop side of one half and leave the other loop side untrimmed to create textural contrast between the light and dark halves.
