What This Idea Means
Inspired by mid-century modern design and bohemian sun graphics, the sunburst coaster features a central half-sun or full celestial circle surrounded by radiating wavy lines. It radiates warmth and positive energy, adding a cheerful bohemian flair to coffee tables.
Materials Needed
- Monk’s Cloth: High-density cotton monk’s cloth.
- Yarn: Terracotta, mustard yellow, beige, and cream worsted yarn.
- Punch Needle Tool: Fine or medium adjustable punch needle.
- Backing Material: Cork sheet cut to a 4.5-inch circle.
- Adhesive: Strong permanent fabric glue or hot glue.
- Tools: Circular template, embroidery hoop, scissors, marker.
How to Make It
- Design Transfer: Trace a 4.5-inch circle onto the Monk’s cloth. Draw a central semi-circle or full circle for the sun core, then sketch soft, wavy rays fanning outward toward the edge.
- Core Punching: Thread mustard yellow yarn and punch the inner sun core using tight, concentric circular passes.
- Ray Punching: Alternate colors (terracotta, beige, cream) along each wavy ray line, working from the inside out to the perimeter.
- Bordering & Sealing: Outline the outer edge with a solid cream border to bind the design. Coat the stitch back with fabric glue. Allow 4–6 hours to dry before trimming edges and pressing onto the cork backing.
Tips and Variations
- Textured Contrast: Use plush chenille yarn for the sun core and standard acrylic yarn for the rays to create a multi-dimensional tactile feel.
- Palette Shift: Swap warm terracotta for deep navy and mustard to create a “Moonburst” or midnight celestial variation.
